I’d suggest taking part in tournaments whenever you find them. It’s totally satisfying when you do score a hit at speed though, as it often results in an instant kill. As other have mentioned, I find that focusing the mouselook on the target is the idea way, even if it leaves you “riding blind” so to speak (I’ve run headfirst into boulders and buildings while fighting from horseback, my poor steed must have a skull of cast iron). I’m using a one-handed longsword and a sheild, and while I find blocking is pretty easy I still have some difficulty hitting infantry targets while moving at a good clip from horseback. After a couple of hours of messing around with the game mechanics and practicing combat (along with starting over three times to get the right mix of attributes and skills for my liking) I’m finally starting to enjoy the game a bit.Ĭombat from horseback is difficult. Hell, it took me at least a handful of fights to figure out that mouse-wheel-up draws your sword, I had been pushing the wheel down and wondering why I switched from crossbow to bare-handed and never cycled to the sword. Over this past weekend I’ve been playing the copy of Warband I bought during the Steam Holiday Sale. A long established multiplayer community being absolutely brutal to newbs isn’t exactly a unique problem for Mount & Blade though. I haven’t played multiplayer so cant really comment on that. I guess I am trying to say it is a really good game (with some rough edges) and very much scratches that elite / pirates / space rangers itch - it doesn’t force you down a path and play will be heaps more fun if you set out to accomplish your own goals - get yourself a castle / kingdom, defeat such and such lord / faction etc. If not, I practically guarantee someone will have modded that! I think you can purchase cows directly from the village screen instead of visiting the village elder? (not sure on this I must admit) It is pretty boring to have to run around the village to find the elder.

You could maybe try some tournament / arena fights to get the hang of combat in a controlled environment? Its actually pretty tough to find “easy” targets in the very early game. You will get your ass handed to you by Sea Raiders etc early on. If you are getting mobbed by six+ dudes - get some friends!! Even 10 or so peasants to be fodder between you and the rest of them helps. You can turn on the “old” method for couching a lance in the options (i did).
